| | Deputy Dave (Dave Allen) Hi! I ran across your website on children's tv hosts while doing a search to reconstruct my memories of the Deputy Dave Show KPIX San Francisco ca 1955.
I believe the host of Dave Allen, and the content was pedestrian and bicycle
safety. As I remember you got "officer" or
"patrolman" cards at first-- Do you know anything about this show? Thanks for what info you can provide. Roger Carlson If you have any pictures or memories to share of Deputy Dave, please click here to email me! | |||

01/21/2010 ... Hello, I stumbled across your website while looking for info on George Lemont who was Fireman Frank on KRON in San Francisco. Growing up in the 50's in nearby Vallejo a lot of memories flooded through my brain. Hopefully some memories might aid you in your research.
George Lemont hosted Fireman Frank on KRON Channel 4. He was an artist and former disc jockey. At some point he had another kid's show called "Uncle George's Cartoon Time." He'd show the kids how to draw cartoons. There was probably more but that's all I remember.
Fireman Frank was a cartoon show with his stable of puppets and a wicked sense of humor that sometimes went over the heads of the kids. My parents would watch it with me. His puppets included Scat the Cat, a beatnik; Dynamo Dudley, a robot with a quivering mouth; Karl the Carrot, a fresh carrot every week who wore sun glasses; Rhode Island Red, a sarcastic rooster. Also, he had Dynamo Dudley's mother, a tin car with a dent in it filled with nuts and bolts. Periodically, a puppet version of another KRON host, a scientist, would show up. He would show Bugs Bunny cartoons and had a ventriloquist version of Bugs with whom he'd banter.

When the show was cancelled he was working on a girl friend for Rhoad Island Red called Leghorn Lily. Even though it wasn't painted he'd show both puppets interacting. I vividly remember, on one of his last shows, he tore the head off of Bugs Bunny but continued to talk to him. His bare hand was sticking out of Bugs' body moving up and down like a mouth. He also drew a cartoon strip for the San Francisco Chronicle, Dr. Smock and also another strip featuring Karl the Carrot. Would love to know if he's still alive or what happened to him.
Captain Fortune was on KPIX and featured his puppet, a pirate named John O'Copper. He lived in a barrel and would emerge when the kids would knock on the barrel. I was on his show one Saturday morning. We played games and watched cartoons and talked with John O'Copper. I think Captain Fortune was Peter Abenheim (sp?) He wasn't a ventriloquist so when John O'Copper talked it was always on a closeup. When the Captain was talking to him, it was a two-shot. Captain Fortune didn't even try to talk without moving his mouth. The show always started with a group of kids getting off a cable car and running up the steps of an old Victorian house and in the front door. Of course, the show originated from the old KPIX studio at Van Ness and Greenwich.
You have a lot of information on Marshall Jay and some info on a Golden Gate Bridge documentary. It was produced by KPIX and Jay Alexander narrated it. The theme song was "Bridge Buildin' Man" and it might have been sung by Jay. At least that's what I always thought. It was produced for the 25th anniversary of the bridge in 1962. It ran again for the 50th anniversary of the bridge in 1987, but I'm not sure where I saw it; possibly again on KPIX?
I remember Deputy Dave but can't remember which station carried him or exactly what years he was on (late 50's or early 60's). His name, I believe, was Dave Allen. Was he a replacement for Marshall Jay? Or a competitor? I met him when he made a personal appearance in Vallejo at a record store, Munter Music on Georgia St. He had made a record and was there to promote it. On one side was "Come Along" which was his theme song. It was a very simple song with a simple tune. The other side was called "Safety First" and was about being safe.
Sorry to go on so long but the memories just kept coming. I was always interested in radio and TV and eventually went into broadcasting where I still am after all these years. I've actually worked with some of the people mentioned on your site.
Thanks for a great site and fond memories.
