MR. QUICK HAMBURGERS Neenah, Wisconsin

Special thanks to Brad Morrison for the picture of the Neenah, Wisconsin Mr. Quick which today is the Local 137 Union Hall.

Stopped by the Union Hall this evening and took a few pictures of the former Mr. Quick building.

Exterior changes to the building have been minimal: The windows on the front of the building have been made smaller. They used to cover the full width. If you look closely, you can see where there used to be 4 windows on each side of the building between where the brick juts out like columns. The brick inside the columns doesn't exactly match.

There is another, larger area on the right side of the building only where the brick doesn't match as well. I'm not sure why that is there. It looks like there was a very large window there at some point, but when it was a restaurant that would have been the kitchen.

I should mention that I don't know what the building was, if anything, in between Mr. Quick and a union hall. Also, as you will see when I send the pictures I have of the Oconomowoc Mr. Quick building, (which is/was identical), the orange roof decoration/mansard has been removed from the Neenah building.

I have a 1972 Neenah / Menasha WI City Directory here, so I looked up 1201 Gillingham Road in the street and avenue guide portion of the book. Here is what I found: There is a listing for 1199 Gillingham Road: Pizza Hut. It's still there and, surprisingly, still a Pizza Hut! Going South from there it takes a jump to 1229 Gillingham Road: Black Angus Steak House. That building was still a restaurant, although with a different name, until it was torn down, about three weeks ago, to make room for the factory on the other side of it to expand. So, it looks like the Mr. Quick building was not built yet when the 1972 City Directory was published.

Another building not listed in the city directory is the roller skating rink just South of the union hall/Mr. Quick. You can see it in the background of two of my pictures. Pizza Hut is visible in the other two.

By the way, all addresses on Gillingham Road are odd numbered because Gillingham Road is the West frontage road for highway 41, which is now 6 lanes, (3 in each direction), until you get just South of this location, (next exit).

Another note, the cities of Neenah and Menasha are sister cities. Most people around here don't know exactly where the dividing line is unless they happen to live on it. Most people from the rest of Wisconsin refer to them jointly as Neenah-Menasha like it's one city. Merger has been discussed for 150 years, but so far only the fire departments of each have merged and that was only 5 years. - Brad
