The week of October 21st, 2007 was certainly a week of Captain Ernie mania leading up to Ernie's 75th birthday on October 28th. Kicking off the week was a tremendous article in the Quad City Times by Doug Smith in his Q-C Collectibles column. Doug really hit a home run by presenting "the" definitive Captain Ernie story. Following Doug's column was a great interview by Jim Albrecht on Friday the 26th with Ernie on WOC 1420 AM. Finally, Paula Sands invited Ernie to be the main guest on her Paula Sands Live program. This one-half hour was just a terrific tribute to Ernie. Paula, as always, was the most professional and gracious host.
Special thanks to Doug, Jim and Paula for making Ernie's 75th birthday one of his best birthdays ever! How ironic that the man who made everyone's birthday something special was honored the same way! Special thanks to Ernie's buddy Eldon Bowers for these behind the scenes shots of Ernie on PSL!
Always the entertainer, Ernie tells a funny story with PSL Program Director Demond Griffin, Paula and Ernie's wife Diana Memos Ernie before the show with award winning anchor Gary Metivier, author of the newly published children's book Willie's Wagon. Some pictures of Ernie's past were shown on Paula's set. Here we see Ernie on WOC radio, most likely in the late 70's or early 80's, taking care of business on the control panel. Ernie wore many hats at WOC, here we see him on Bandstand Six which capitalized on the popularity of Dick Clark's American Bandstand. Terrific pictures taken during the show. Notice the Showboat Birthday cake presented to Ernie. Paula is discussing their time together on PM Magazine which was an infotainment program on WOC during the 1980s. Ernie was invited by Paula to sit in with Linda Cook during her movie review segment. Say! Who is interviewing who here?!
