I've been reading your website about Sandy's Drive-In.
I'm from Grand Forks, ND and have memories of the Sandy's we had here in the 1960's. I was very young at the time but remember getting hamburgers there.
Sandy's was located on the busiest intersection in Grand Forks; the corner of DeMers Avenue and South Washington Street. Across the street to the south of Sandy's was a supermarket; the Red Owl Store. When my parents went in to shop, often an employee of Sandy's put advertising on the windshields of the cars in the Red Owl parking lot. The advertising stated to come in and get a free hamburger which we did after the grocery shopping. I have fond faded memories of coming out to the car hoping Sandy's had put a flyer under the windshield wiper blade for the free hamburger. When there was indeed a flyer my Dad would drive over to Sandy's, I would run in and get my free burger! Exciting times for a 10 year old!
I've attached a scan of a Sandy's paper ashtray I found at a garage sale a few years ago, and have it now on my bulletin board. The ashtray was in a box with several other things, and it reminded me of the old place so I kept it.
Thanks for all the great memories, and I admire your dedication to Sandy's.

04/27/2009 ... I was at the local library this afternoon researching a few things and I also did some checking about the Sandy's in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
Sandy's is first mentioned in the November 1968 Grand Forks phone book, and every year up to the November 1972 edition. The 1973 phone book doesn't include it so that must have been when it closed. Below is a scan of the advertisement placed in The November 1969 edition of the Grand Forks phone book. Click on the picture to get a bigger view.

The Grand Forks location at Demers and Washington was an operating Hardees until at least 2004 when I left Grand Forks ND. It doesn't show on their location map anymore. - Sandy's fan Chris N.
