Sandy's Normal Illinois

Sandy's Normal Illinois

From the date this one opened, I'm sure it would have been a 4th generation Sandy's building. From the aerial shot on WindowsLiveLocal (below), the address shows it to be around the intersection, but it seems to be off a bit.

Sandy's opened around 1973 and probably converted within that next year. The city directories show Bucky's as residing there from 1974-1981.

By cross-referencing the city directories, I figured the building had been torn down sometime in the early nineties, and then replaced with a new building for use by Illinois State University. After taking a second look after getting home, I am not so sure the building was torn down.

The large brown building to the north is a church. I looked up that address, and it is 201 South Main. Sandy's would have been 205 South Main. This address is now listed as being used by ISU, but none of these buildings look like those of newer construction.

It seems as though the building south of the church could possible be a 4th gen building that has been modified to suit the needs of the university. I've seen a lot of cases where the addresses have shifted, but with so many older buildings already in existence, it seems unlikely.

Anyway the attached photo shows the area that Sandy's would have been located. I'll poke around some more when I get back up there.

04/28/2009 ... I snapped a couple of good pics today of the Normal Sandy's. Today this building is owned by Illinois State University. Due to the window placement and size, I think it is pretty safe to say that it is a modified 4th generation building. A coupe of the pics show the address: 205 South Main, which was indeed the address for the short lived Sandy's. It converted to a Hardee's within months after opening, while Sandy's Bloomington remained Sandy's until 1977, before it switched to Bucky's until 1981.

Enjoy,
