Sandy's Osh Kosh, Wisconsin

Sandy's Osh Kosh, Wisconsin

Rich Kummerlowe who has the outstanding America's Landmark, Under the Orange Roof website which is a tribute to Howard Johnson's, provides this great ad for Sandy's Osh Kosh, Wisconsin location!

Osh Kosh was Sandy's location #77 and was located at 409 Algoma Street and most likely opened in 1964. This ad appeared on February 27th, 1965 and is obviously Sandy's famous Hi-Lo burger with the cheese in the middle and the pickle on top! However, in this ad it is announced as Sandy's Twin Titan Sandwich! Perhaps Sandy's had not yet begun to call the Hi-Lo by its common name at this time.

Notice at the bottom that Sandy's Drive-In is announcing the feature of eating inside. By this time the emphasis was turning away from the standard walk-up Sandy's and moving toward sit down and eat family dining.

06/25/2008 ... Sandy's fan Brad Morrison writes;

I enjoyed reading about Sandy's. I remember the family stopping at the one in Oshkosh WI once when I was very young so my older brother could run in and get some french fries with his paper route money! The rest of us stayed in the car, so I was never inside it when it was Sandy's, but I remember the big Scottish girl on the sign!

One of my friends worked there many years later when it was Hardee's. As I recall, some of the light fixtures had the Hardee's "H" and plaid on them. The original building was torn down after they built a new Hardee's right in front of the old one in the mid to late 1980s. (Actually, they had to tear off a little bit of one corner of the old building during construction because the two buildings overlapped a little bit!) That newer building is still a Hardee's.
