Sandy's fan Henry Dolive remembers Sandy's in Shawnee!
The Sandy's in Shawnee, Oklahoma was at 419 N Union, across from Woodland Park. It opened in either 1960 or 1961, I think (could have been 1959) - I was a student at Shawnee Junior High, located on N Union, just south and across the street from Sandy's, when it opened.
The pictures you have on your website of other Sandy's really brought back memories for me. While I don't have an actual photo of the one in Shawnee, it looked almost exactly like these!
I also remember their commercials on the local radio station, with a Scottish-sounding announcer saying, "Pure beef hamburgers just 15 cents ... at Sandy's." I can almost hear them now.
I also remember one of their hamburgers was made with cabbage instead of lettuce. Really good, as I recall, and they had good milkshakes too. (One other interesting sidelight - Shawnee, OK is where the Sonic Drive-in chain started. The first Sonic was located there, although the first one built as a Sonic was in Stillwater, OK)
Thanks for putting up a really cool website.
Henry L. Dolive
