Sandy's West 13th Street Wichita Kansas

09/26/2008 ... Sandy's fan Warren Johnston not only remembers Sandy's, he was one of the Wichita Sandy's managers!

Hello, I am Warren Johnston and I was the Night Manager at the Sandy's located at 456 W. 13th in Wichita, KS from July 1970 through January 1974. I was hired shortly after getting out of the US Army. My little brother, Jim Johnston who was the Night Manager at the East Kellogg Sandy's, told me about the opening. Walter Hanks was the manager at the time who hired me.

The experience of working at Sandy's is one I will never forget. Got to work with several great people and also met untold numbers of great people who came in as customers. One experience comes to mind when my cousin and her husband came in. Don had never been in a fast food place in his life and he fell in love with the Big Scot. Needles to say he came in numerous time after that while I worked there.

Speaking of the Big Scot, I noticed something in your site about someone wanting to know what was in the special sauce. As I remember it, we started out with a 5 gallon bucket of mayonnaise, 1 gallon of muster, a #10 can of sweet pickle relish, a #10 can of dill pickle relish, sugar and dehydrated onions, not sure on the amount of sugar and onions. After mixing everything together, the sauce was refrigerated for 24 hours before using. That sauce along with the shredded cabbage made it a far superior sandwich over the Big Mac.

Another items that I really enjoyed was the Pork Tender Sandwich. After deep frying the pork tender, it was placed on a toasted bun with mustard pickle and onion. Still hard to find anything close to that here in the Wichita area today.

I am attaching some photo's that I recently found taken at the W. 13th Sandy's. Looking at the slide frame that the pictures came from, the timeframe is late summer of 1970. Looking at the menu board make me wish for the good old days and the prices. A hamburger for 20 cents, Big Scot for 54 cents and soft drinks 15, 20 or 30 cents.

I hope that this brings back some good memories for others and that everyone enjoys the photographs.

Found this one online... Wichita, KS I think. There was one on W. Seminary (between Hemphill & James) in Fort Worth. It's still there but has been converted to a washiteria.
